After three readings of the Linn County minimum wage ordinance, my colleagues and I on the Board of Supervisors have passed an increase in the minimum wage for Linn County workers. The ordinance creates three increases, each occurring on January 1st:
1) $8.25 on January 1, 2017
2) $9.25 on January 1, 2018
3) $10.25 on January 1, 2019
Cities within Linn County can choose to vote to lower the minimum wage within their jurisdictional boundaries.
This is a historic vote by the Board of Supervisors. The state legislature has not raised the minimum wage since 2006 and is unlikely to take up the issue this legislative session. County government is the layer of government that provides the public assistance programs that people rely on when they cannot meet basic needs.
